Wall Street Giant Deepens Ties With Abu Dhabi Through Strategic Stake Purchase

2 min read

Apollo Global Management is closing in on a deal to acquire nearly ten percent of Mubadala Capital, the asset management arm of Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund. While financial details remain private, the move signals a major escalation in the relationship between the American investing powerhouse and the United Arab Emirates. This isn’t a sudden pivot but rather the culmination of fifteen years of networking and collaboration within what many investors call the capital of capital.

The partnership builds upon a foundation laid in 2022 when Apollo and Mubadala Investment Company first teamed up to create customized financing solutions for global companies. That alliance grew even stronger last year with the launch of a two and a half billion dollar joint venture focused on private credit. Much of this momentum can be attributed to the strong personal rapport between John Zito, co-president of Apollo’s asset management division, and Mubadala Capital CEO Hani Barhoush, whose shared vision regarding scale and market dominance drove these negotiations forward.

For Mubadala Capital, which manages over sixty billion dollars in alternatives and advises on hundreds of billions more, bringing Apollo into its ownership structure provides a powerful boost to its global standing. In an industry where massive pools of capital act as a competitive moat, this alignment helps the Abu Dhabi firm expand its reach across its offices in cities like New York and London while cementing its role as a primary player on the world stage.

Perhaps most interestingly, this transaction highlights a shifting power dynamic between Western finance and Middle Eastern wealth. For decades, American firms viewed Abu Dhabi primarily as a source of funding to be tapped. Now, by taking a direct equity stake in one of the region’s crown jewels, Apollo is flipping that script and placing a significant bet on the UAE’s own institutional infrastructure and long term economic vision.
